We left mid-morning, mid-week, so traffic was no issue, and we had the leisure to stop at a few places on the way South. Reaching Tokaanu around 1530 we decided to head straight for Whakapapa, rather than leaving it until after checking in our luggage at the hostel, if we were to have appreciable time up at the ski village before we lost the light. Not to mention once we stopped we may not want to get going again, and there are never guarantees that conditions the next day will be as promising.
